Prayer is not about a formula, checklist or ritual, but about faith and a genuine relationship with God. In that relationship we should call on Him (Genesis 4:26) daily, walk and talk with Him, listen and learn from Him. It is okay to pray to God about anything and everything on your heart (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Do you think you can pray with thanksgiving and praise?
We learn and hear better when our hearts and minds are clear. Therefore, we should ask God to help us see areas where we have wronged others and seek His grace and forgiveness (1 John 1:7,9). A person can be made right – declared righteous before God “through faith in Jesus Christ” (Romans 4:25). When we put God first, and seek Him first, He provides our basic needs (Luke 6:35-36).
It is okay to ask for help and guidance daily. God has a plan and purpose for all of us and it is key to stay close to Him to help make sure we are on the right path that he has planned for us (Ephesians 2:10).
Not sure of what to say in a prayer? Ask God to help you (Romans 8:26-28). Try to avoid showy prayers in secret, in public etc., that are filled with meaningless words and lack heart and sincerity. God wants to hear our hearts and sincere feelings. No matter your past, we all are encouraged to pray and read our Bible daily. God speaks to us through His word; therefore, it is very important to read His gift, His word, truth…the Bible (1 Timothy 2:8, John 15:7-8).
Remember to be thankful (Psalms 100: 4-5) and humble in your prayers (1 Peter 5:5), when our prayers are self focused and proud, it becomes hard to focus on others and to pray for the well-being of others…even those who have wronged us. Sometimes we really need to forgive our enemies for ourselves vs. the other person. Ask God to help you focus on others and not compare yourself with others…everyone has a different and unique plan. Pray for God to continue to utilize you for His will vs. selfish motivates (Luke 22:42). Remember, God sees, hears and knows everything. However, he wants to hear our hearts when we pray, if you struggle with a deep pain, it is okay to ask for guidance on how to resolve that pain (2 Chronicles 7:14)
Below is a great prayer to use as a base and then you can let whatever your heart desires to pray come next. Go ahead and try it now…
Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV
In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
